KCUE and Presidential Committee on Ageing Society and Population Policy Sign MOU
- University and government join forces to fight population crisis -
□ The Korean Council for University Education (KCUE), led by Chairman Yang O-bong (President of Jeonbuk National University), met with the Presidential Committee on Ageing Society and Population Policy (Vice Chair Joo Hyung-hwan) at the Government Complex Seoul on May 2, 2025 at 2 p.m. to sign a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to address the population crisis.
□ This MOU was conceived as a result of discussions between the two institutions about working together to effectively address the worsening problems of low birth rates and an aging population, and to leverage the capabilities of higher education institutions in responding to the national crisis.
□ Joo Hyung-hwan, Vice Chair of the Committee, the head of the policy department and other officials attended the signing ceremony. KCUE was represented by Chairman Yang O-bong and Secretary General Lee Kyung-hee. This reaffirmed the commitment of the two organizations to cooperation.
□ Under the MOU, the two parties will cooperate in the following areas:
◦ Strengthen support for students and young adults in their job search and entry into the labor market.
◦ Explore cooperative measures to widen university access for families with multiple children
◦ Create institutional foundations for work-life balance for university staff Promote continued education and lifelong learning to prepare for an aging society
◦ Facilitate substantive cooperation in response to the population crisis
□ KCUE Chairman Yang O-bong said, "This MOU is an important first step in fulfilling universities' social responsibilities and addressing the national population crisis. KCUE, in cooperation with universities across the country, will play an active role in creating a society where younger generations can plan their future with hope."
□ Universities will use the momentum of this MOU to position themselves as a partner that plays a role in policies for younger generations and a family-friendly society, and to pursue well-orchestrated cooperation with the government to achieve substantial changes and results.
