2024 Content Contest for Operational Support for University Support Centers for Students with Disabilities: KCUE Holds an Awards Ceremony and Forum to Disseminate the Results

On December 10, the Korean Council for University Education (KCUE) Higher Education Support Center for Students with Disabilities held an awards ceremony and forum for the 2024 content contest for operational support for university support centers for students with disabilities at the Seoul Fraser Place Central Seodaemun. The Higher Education Support Center for Students with Disabilities aimed to identify and disseminate universities’ best practices in support for students with disabilities and share their experience in support for students with disabilities, thereby contributing to the development of support systems for students with disabilities.

The content contest for operational support for university support centers for students with disabilities received entries from undergraduate and postgraduate students with disabilities, their guardians, and university staff (faculty members and employees) in the forms of videos and essays. The judging panel selected two entries as the Grand Prize winners, which will be unveiled on KCUE’s official YouTube channel @kcue-adigatv.

The awards ceremony was followed by a session to share universities’ best practices with universities selected for support centers for students with disabilities (99 universities). Five cases were presented with a particular focus on the operation of the support center for students with disabilities: [Case 1] Seoul National University’s learning activity support to ensure the right to education of students with disabilities; [Case 2] Daegu Cyber University’s support for the use of learning aids and academic achievement of students with disabilities in the online environment; [Case 3] Mokpo National University’s environmental education and recycling program for students with disabilities as part of its commitment to the community; [Case 4] Hanyang University's employability program for students with disabilities integrated with the Achievement of College Education Plus (ACE+) project; and [Case 5] Daegu University's multidisciplinary support for the convenience of students with disabilities and awareness improvement. The source book is available on the KCUE website.

KCUE was designated as the Higher Education Support Center for Students with Disabilities on January 31, 2024, in accordance with Article 33 of the Act on Special Education for Persons with Disabilities, to provide comprehensive support for students with disabilities attending university. Highlights of the center's activities in 2024 include support for university support centers for students with disabilities (99 universities), customized career and employability programs for students with disabilities (10 universities), research on supporting higher education for students with disabilities, production and distribution of manuals and promotional brochures, customized consultation for university support centers for students with disabilities, and staff training on disability awareness.

Moving forward, the Higher Education Support Center for Students with Disabilities will continue to maintain streamlined communication with universities and identify and disseminate best practices with the aim to improve awareness of support for undergraduate and graduate students with disabilities and ensure accountability for higher education support for students with disabilities.
