KCUE Hosts HEAT Scholar‘s Networking Event - Celebration on Acquisition of Doctoral Degrees

First Six Doctoral Graduates Produced  


On August 4(Friday), the Korean Council for University Education (KCUE) will host the HEAT Scholars’ Networking Event - Celebration on Acquisition of Doctoral Degreesat the InterContinental Seoul COEX. The event celebrates the first acquisition of doctoral degree under the Higher Education for ASEAN Talents (HEAT) project and aims to promote networking among scholars.

    〇 This is the first scholars’ networking event held since the COVID-19 pandemic, celebrating the inaugural doctoral graduates of the HEAT project and aiming to strengthen networking among scholars. Additionally, an award ceremony will be held for the winners of the academic essay competition, organized to enhance scholars' research capabilities.

     〇 In celebration of the event, attendees will include Ambassador Jang-keun Lee of the Mission of the Republic of Korea to ASEAN, representatives from ASEAN embassies in Korea, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the ASEAN-Korea Centre, and other government departments and related organizations. Additionally, to celebrate the scholars obtaining their doctoral degrees, presidents, vice-presidents, and deans from the ASEAN universities where these scholars serve as faculty members are expected to visit Korea.

The HEAT project, supported by the ASEAN-ROK Cooperation Fund (AKCF), invites faculty members with master's degrees from ASEAN countries to Korea to pursue doctoral degrees.

     〇 Currently, a total of 82 scholars from ASEAN countries are pursuing doctoral degrees at six participating universities in Korea under the HEAT project. This cohort includes individuals from Laos (2), Malaysia (1), Myanmar (7), Vietnam (22), Indonesia (33), Cambodia (1), Thailand (6), and the Philippines (10). In August of this year, six scholars one each from Laos, Myanmar, and Indonesia, and three from Vietnam are scheduled to receive their doctoral degrees.

Project Name: Higher Education for ASEAN Talents (HEAT)

Objective: To nurture Korea-friendly educational elites

Eligibility: Faculty members from ASEAN universities with a master's degree.

Support Provided: Admission fees and tuition for doctoral programs over three years, living expenses, management expenses for scholarship students, etc

Project Duration: March 2020 to November 2025

Budget: A total of $8,365,720 for the entire project

Implementing Agency: Korean Council for University Education (KCUE).

Funding Source: ASEAN-ROK Cooperation Fund (AKCF).

Participating Universities: Kangwon National University, Kyung Hee University, Korea University, Ewha Womans University, Jeonbuk National University, Chung-Ang University (six universities)

 

 

The main contents of the event are as follows.

     〇 During the event, a ceremony will be held to present congratulatory plaques to the first six scholars who have obtained doctoral degrees through the HEAT project, celebrating their academic achievements. The graduates will also share their reflections during the event.

     〇 Professor Jae-Eun Chae of Gachon University, who served as the Chair of the 2022 HEAT Scholarship Committee, will deliver a keynote speech on "The Meanings of HEAT Project.“

     〇 Following the keynote, Minah Park, Director of the International Cooperation Team at KCUE, will present on "The Progress of the HEAT Project.“

     〇 The event will feature the announcement and awarding of winners from the HEAT Academic Essay Contest, with the winning scholars presenting their essays.

     〇 Additionally, networking sessions will be organized to facilitate exchanges between Korean and ASEAN universities and scholars.

Je-kuk Chang, Chairman of KCUE expressed gratitude to the government and related organizations for their support of the HEAT project and congratulated the first six scholars who have obtained doctoral degrees through this HEAT project.

       〇 KCUE has announced plans to further enhance the HEAT project to support scholars in achieving academic excellence and strengthening their research capabilities. Through this initiative, KCUE aims to foster collaboration in higher education and promote human resource exchanges between Korea and ASEAN countries, contributing to the development of Korea-friendly educational elites.
