KCUE welcomes the joint proposal by the ruling and opposition parties for a complete revision of the Higher Education Act


Through a forward-looking revision, the autonomy of universities will be dramatically expanded


The Korean Council for University Education (KCUE) expressed its support for the complete revision of the Higher Education Act, jointly proposed by Representative Kim Dae-sik (ruling party) and Representative Kim Jun-hyuk (opposition party) of the National Assembly's Education Committee.

Chairman of the KCUE, Park Sang-gue (President of Chung-Ang University) emphasized the necessity of the legislation, stating, "The complete revision of the Higher Education Actwill proactively respond to the massive changes, such as the rapid shifts in demographic and industrial structures that our society is facing. It will serve as a foundation for universities and communities to achieve mutual growth beyond coexistence."

He also remarked, "The complete revision of the Higher Education Actbeing proposed for the first time in 26 years since its enactment in 1998 is a highly significant event for the university community. Through this revision, I hope universities will be able to actively respond to societal demands and lead the changes and innovations of the advanced industrial era."

The complete revision of the Higher Education Actincludes provisions for strengthening university autonomy, a comprehensive overhaul of university governance systems, the establishment of a continuous regulatory review framework, and the creation of a paradigm for mutual growth between universities and local communities. KCUE stated that it will actively collaborate with the National Assembly to ensure the passage of the complete revision of the Higher Education Actduring the current regular session.
