Geosuk Suh, President of Chonbuk National University, was inaugurated as the 19th Chairman of the Korean Council for University Education (KCUE). The KCUE held an inauguration ceremony at its main conference room in Seoul, on April 8. Among the attendants were university presidents, government officials and parliamentary members including Hak Yong Shin, Education, Culture, Sports, and Tourism Committee (chair of ECSTC, Democratic United Party), Se Yeon Kim (ECSTC, Saenuri Party), Sye-kyun Chung (ECSTC, Democratic United Party), Yunduk Kim, (ECSTC, Democratic United Party), Chaechun Gim, Secretary to President for Education, Baeg-beom Park, Assistant Minister of University and College Affairs under the Ministry of Education. The farewell ceremony was also held for the former Chairman, In-Suk Hamm.
Chairman Suh said “A recent sharp drop in the university-age population and financial strains at universities pose a direct threat to Korean universities” and added “I feel enormous responsibility at a critical juncture to redefine changes and developments for higher education”. He explained “The call of today’s universities is to provide well-trained young talent to society and lead national development through high-quality researches” and added “The KCUE should remember where it started and help universities resolve difficulties and shape policy directions for the development of higher education.”
